Riparian Shade Mapping – Keeping Rivers Cool

Using 50 cm canopy height models derived from national LiDAR data, riparian shading was assessed along river corridors based on sun path and zenith angles during peak summer months. Blue areas represent denser canopy cover and effective shading, while red areas highlight open sections with higher sun exposure. These outputs support conservation planning by identifying priority zones for riparian planting and habitat protection — helping to maintain suitable water temperatures for salmonid species.
