Date
May 2025
Location
Llandaniel Fab, Ynys Môn, Cymru
The Patterned Stone at Bryn Celli Ddu is a significant Neolithic artefact that offers insights into the site's ritualistic past. Discovered during the 1928 excavation, this stone was found lying flat over a central pit within the henge, suggesting it was deliberately placed as part of the earlier monument phase .
Carved from coarse gritstone, the stone features intricate designs of spirals and zig-zags that span both sides and the top, indicating it was originally intended to stand upright. These motifs are characteristic of Neolithic art and may have held symbolic or ceremonial significance .
Due to concerns about weathering, the original stone was relocated to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff for preservation. A replica now stands at Bryn Celli Ddu, positioned where the original is believed to have stood, allowing visitors to appreciate its historical context .
