Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Site

Project type

Survey

Date

May 2025

Location

Llanddaniel Fab, Ynys Môn (Anglesey), Cymru

Bryn Celli Ddu, meaning "the Mound in the Dark Grove", is one of Wales’s most iconic prehistoric sites, located on Ynys Môn (Anglesey). Originally constructed as a Neolithic henge monument, it was later adapted into a chambered tomb. A narrow stone passage leads into an octagonal burial chamber beneath a large earthen mound, where human remains, carved stones, and flint artefacts have been discovered.

The site is especially well known for its summer solstice alignment. On the longest day of the year, sunlight shines directly along the tomb's entrance passage and illuminates the inner chamber. This rare solar alignment reveals a sophisticated understanding of seasonal cycles and celestial movement by its builders, and continues to attract visitors and researchers each year.

Wren 3D carried out a detailed LiDAR survey of the site, capturing both the structure and surrounding landscape in high resolution. As part of the project, we provided a set of progressive outputs including a raw point cloud, a cleaned mesh, and a fully textured mesh model. These demonstrate not only the level of detail achievable at each stage, but also the logical workflow from scan to final deliverable. The resulting models provide a comprehensive digital record suitable for research, conservation, public engagement, and education. This work could supports wider efforts to preserve and share culturally significant sites across Wales using modern, high-accuracy spatial methods.
